Promenons-nous dans les bois

Promenons-nous dans les Bois

French song for children about going for a walk in the woods and asking a wolf whether he is there plus what he is doing.
Read the lyrics and join in with the video clip.
The song is very similar to ‘What’s the time, Mr Wolf’,  but the wolf is getting dressed so every time the children ask what he is doing (Que fais-tu?), he replies by telling them which item of clothing he is putting on until he is dressed and ready for the chase ..!

Loup y es-tu?
Wolf, are you there?

Que fais-tu?
What are you doing?

Promenons-nous dans les bois is also available on
Spotify, and  Apple Music.

Children dance and sing the following REFRAIN:

Promenons-nous dans les bois
–  Let’s go for a walk in the woods
Pendant que le loup n’y est pas!
–  Whilst the wolf is not there!
Si le loup y était, il nous mangerait,
–  If the wolf were there, it would eat us,
Mais quand il n’y est pas …
–  But when it is not there …
Il nous mangera pas!
–  It will not eat us!

Then the children stop and ask:

Loup y es-tu?
–  Wolf are you there?
Entends-tu?
–  Can you hear us?
Que fais-tu?
–  What are you doing?

The children repeat the song again and again.
Each time the wolf replies by saying what he is putting on until he is fully dressed and ready for the chase:

Je mets ma chemise!
–  I am putting on my shirt

Je mets ma culotte!
–  I am putting on my trousers

Je mets ma veste!
–  I am putting on my jacket

Je mets ma cravate!
–  I am putting on my tie

Je mets mes chaussettes!
–  I am putting on my socks

Je mets mes bottes!
–  I am putting on my boots

J’ARRIVE ..!
–  I AM COMING!

French Game 1.

–  Tell the children to make a circle and put their hands behind their back.
–   Choose one of them to be the ferret and stand in the middle of the circle.
–   Ask those in the circle to hold onto a piece of string behind their backs.
Threaded onto the string is a ring which the children must pass from one to the other while they walk around in a circle singing  ‘Il court le Furet’.
The child who is the ferret has to guess who is holding the ring and if he/she gets it right, she swaps places with the child holding the ring who then becomes the ferret.

French Game 2.

A child is chosen to be the ferret and all the other children hold hands and walk around him/her in a circle singing:

Il court il court le furet
le furet du bois, Mesdames.
Il court, il court le furet,
le furet du bois joli.

Then, still holding hands, the children lift up their arms to make space for ‘the ferret’ to pass underneath, zigzaging in and out of the circle.   During this time the following refrain is sung several times:

Il est passé par ici,
il repassera par là!

Finally the children cry  ‘il dort!‘  (he is sleeping), and the ferret curls up in the middle of the circle.
Children take it in turns to be the ferret.

The Words:
Il court, il court le furet,
Le furet du bois, Mesdames.
Il court, il court, le furet,
Le furet du bois joli.

Refrain:
Il est passé par ici.
Il repassera par là.

– – – –

English Translation:

The ferret runs, it runs,
The ferret of the wood, Ladies and Gentlemen.
The ferret runs, it runs,
The ferret from the pretty wood.

Refrain:
He has passed by here
He will pass by again over there.
