French Prepositions for Place, Destination + Transport
Au, à la, à l’, aux are French prepositions for Place + Destination. They are used to say where people are or where they are going.
En + à are transport prepositions that are used to say how people get to where they are going.
Au, à la, à l’, aux
= to, at, where.
Use au + masculine words
E.g. Je vais au collège
Use à la + feminine words
E.g. Je vais à la cantine
Use à l’ + any word that begins with a vowel
E.g. Je vais à l’école.
Use aux + all plural words, masculine or feminine
E.g. Nous allons aux magasins.

en avion by airplane
en bateau by boat
en train by train
en moto by motorbike
à pied on foot
à velo by bike
(en vélo can also be used)
